Information

La Falla Immaterial 2017 is a citizen science project that was conceived after the Fallas Festivity was inscribed on the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO

The project aims to put together the local tradition, the use of social networks and the collection of large amounts of data with the ultimate goal of collaboratively constructing the first falla that has ever been created by an artificial intelligence engine.

La Falla Immaterial is not limited by the laws of the physical world: it is ubiquitous, it is anonymous, it is open and dynamic. La Falla Immaterial is set to become the spark of an evolution and to achieve a high level of participation in the Fallas Festivity.

La Falla learns from you and erects itself autonomously. If you interact with it there is no way back: from then on you become a part of La Falla Immaterial!

What is citizen science about?
Citizen science proposes the participation of the general public in scientific research projects. The altruistic collaboration of the population allows to gather experimental data at the same time as it generates a broader scientific culture in society.
What is this project concerned about?
La Falla Immaterial is devoted to making people aware of the role played by new technologies and data science in massive festive events, and aware of the image we ourselves project from our presence in social networks.
What values does La Falla Immaterial want to promote?
La Falla Immaterial is aligned with the Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) approach that is included in the European Framework Programmes funded by the European Comission. Thus, it promotes universal values such as: tradition, tolerance, diversity, transparency, ecology, equality... La Falla Immaterial does not demand exclusivity nor it defends a monolithic way of thinking. Quite the contrary, La Falla Immaterial is inclusive and multifaceted
Why La Falla?
The Fallas Festivity is a kaleidoscope of tradition and culture that projects València around the world. La Falla Immaterial only seeks to be a humble mirror in this marvelous artifact which everybody can play and have some fun with. La Falla Immaterial is in no way meant to supersede any aspect of the local festivity nor to replace its key players:comissions, artists, falleres and fallers.
Why Immaterial?
UNESCO describes the Intangible Cultural Heritage as traditional, contemporary, living, inclusive, representative and community-based. La Falla Immaterial is just another example of an initiative that can be depicted using these terms.
What characterizes La Falla Immaterial?
La Falla Immaterial is collaborative, experimental, collective, peripheral, universal, ubiquitous, accessible, diverse, anonymous, ecological, participative, generative, open, dynamic, pioneering, innovative, disruptive, artificial, intelligent, technological, autonomous, reactive, communicative, proactive, social, virtual and inclusive.
What does the shape of La Falla Immaterial depend on?
The monuments show the words and emoticons mostly used by participants. The shape of the Fallas matches the level of participation per hour, where each bin corresponds to 2 hours and the extremes represent midnight. La Falla Efímera takes only the messages sent over the last hour and its shape also follows the level or participation but it now divides the hour in minute bins.
Which science and technology is behind La Falla Immaterial?
La Falla Immaterial uses data analysis algorithms to automatically build the monuments and it uses web and technologies to collect data and show the results. The know-how comes from the Msc in Data Science and the Msc in Services and Web Applications Engineering from the School of Engineering at the University of Valencia. It is the School of Enginyeering that drives the project from the Burjassot-Paterna Campus.
What is this project’s privacy policy?
La Falla Immaterial is anonymous, no fees or obligations will be required and it will never contact you. La Falla Immaterial just processes those messages that have been publicly shared with the project through social networks or by using this website. This information will not be shared with third parties and its use will be restricted to the scientific scope of the project. Everybody has the right to access, rectify, cancel or oppose the process of information that concerns them by sending an e-mail to dades@fallaimmaterial.com. Here you can find the general Terms of Use and Data Policy of La Falla Immaterial.
Who is behind La Falla Immaterial?
The team in charge of the development of La Falla Immaterial is made up of seven members:
Francisco Grimaldo y Emilio Soria (lead investigators); Eusebio Marqués, Juanjo Garcés y Emilia López (data analysts); Daniel García (web programming); Alejandro Casasús (graphic design), Carlos Fabre (communication).
